SUMMARY:Author Talk: Bruce Holsinger\, "Culpability"
DESCRIPTION:This event will take place on Tuesday\, March 3rd at 7 p.m. in the Community Room. \nDarien Library and Barrett Bookstore are excited to welcome author Bruce Holsinger\, who will discuss his new book\, Culpability. Culpability explores a world newly shaped by chatbots\, autonomous cars\, drones\, and other nonhuman forces in ways that are thrilling\, challenging\, and unimaginably provocative. \nAll the rage with book groups\, this novel is a riveting family drama about moral responsibility in the age of artificial intelligence. Come join us for what will surely be an engaging discussion! \nAbout the Book\nWhen the Cassidy-Shaws’ autonomous minivan collides with an oncoming car\, seventeen-year-old Charlie is in the driver’s seat\, with his father\, Noah\, riding shotgun. In the back seat\, tweens Alice and Izzy are on their phones\, while their mother\, Lorelei\, a world leader in the field of artificial intelligence\, is absorbed in her work. Yet each family member harbors a secret that implicates them in the accident. \nDuring a weeklong recuperation on the Chesapeake Bay\, the family confronts the excruciating moral dilemmas triggered by the crash. Noah tries to hold the family together as a seemingly routine police investigation jeopardizes Charlie’s future. Alice and Izzy turn strangely furtive. And Lorelei’s odd behavior tugs at Noah’s suspicions that there is a darker truth behind the incident—suspicions heightened by the sudden intrusion of Daniel Monet\, a tech mogul whose mysterious history with Lorelei hints at betrayal. When Charlie falls for Monet’s teenaged daughter\, the stakes are raised even higher in this propulsive family drama that is also a fascinating exploration of the moral responsibility and ethical consequences of AI. \nAbout the Author\nBruce Holsinger is the author of Culpability\, the 116th selection of Oprah’s Book Club and hailed by Oprah Winfrey as “a must-read for all generations.” His four previous novels include The Gifted School\, which won the Colorado Book Award\, and The Displacements\, the inaugural title in the United Nations Read for Action Book Club. \nHe’s also written many works of non-fiction\, most recently On Parchment: Animals\, Archives\, and the Making of Culture from Herodotus to the Digital Age. His essays and reviews have appeared in The New York Times\, Vanity Fair\, and many other publications\, and he has been profiled on NPR’s Weekend Edition\, Here & Now\, and Marketplace. He teaches English at the University of Virginia and is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship.

SUMMARY:Storytime & Craft with Author Valerie Bolling
DESCRIPTION:Darien Children’s Library celebrates with Women’s History Month with a special storytime and craft. Families are invited to listen to local author Valerie Bolling read aloud from her newest picture book\, “The March for Hope”! Each registered family will receive a free signed copy of the book. \nIn this uplifting picture book\, a young Black girl’s identities converge at the Women’s March\, helping her find power in her voice and her community. \nMama and I are on our way to the Women’s March. I wish we were going somewhere else. Somewhere fun. \nOverwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the protest\, Hope is unsure of how she fits into this movement and how she can make her voice heard—after all\, she didn’t seem to have any power when her teacher discriminated against her in class. \nBut when she and Mama join a group of Black women protesters\, Hope sees herself in them and discovers that one voice\, no matter how small\, can make powerful change. \nAfter the storytime\, participants will have the chance to create their own piece of art as inspired by the book. \nFor families with children age 5 and up. Please register each child who plans to attend the event: each family who registers and attends the program will receive a free signed copy of The March for Hope. \nAbout the Author\nValerie Bolling is passionate about creating stories in which all children can see themselves and feel seen and heard\, valued and validated. She is the author of eight picture books (The March for Hope; A Flea for Justice; I See Color; Let’s Dance!; Together We Ride\, Together We Swim\, Ride\, Roll\, Run: Time for Fun!\, and Bing\, Bop\, Bam: Time to Jam!) and Rainbow Days\, a Scholastic Acorn early reader series. \nA graduate of Tufts University and Columbia University\, Teachers College\, Valerie has been an educator for 30 years and is an active member of the kidlit community – teaching picture book classes\, serving as a mentor\, and presenting at conferences. Valerie lives in Connecticut with her husband where they enjoy traveling\, hiking\, reading\, going to the theater\, and dancing.

SUMMARY:Remembering the American Revolution with Michael Hattem
DESCRIPTION:This event will take place on Thursday\, March 12th at 7 p.m. in the Community Room. \nThis program is part of our year-long celebration of ‘America 250\,’ the Semiquincentennial of our country’s founding. \nDarien Library welcomes Michael D. Hattem\, author of The Memory of ’76\, as he explores the unique place of the American Revolution in the nation’s history and culture\, examining how key events and figures from Connecticut have been remembered and woven into America’s origin story. \nAbout Michael D. Hattem\nMichael D. Hattem is an American historian\, with interests in early America\, the American Revolution\, and historical memory. He received his PhD in History at Yale University and has taught at The New School and Knox College. He is the author of The Memory of ’76: The Revolution in American History (Yale University Press\, 2024)\, a finalist for the 2025 George Washington Prize\, and Past and Prologue: Politics and Memory in the American Revolution (Yale University Press\, 2020). His work has been featured or mentioned in The New York Times\, TIME magazine\, The Smithsonian Magazine\, the Washington Post\, as well as many other mainstream media publications and outlets. He has served as a historical consultant or contributor for a number of projects\, curated historical exhibitions\, appeared in television documentaries\, and authenticated and written catalogue essays for historical document auctions. He is currently the Associate Director of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute. \nThe President’s Series\nWelcome to the President’s Series —an engaging collection of special events hosted by Darien Library in collaboration with the President of the Board and members of the Library Board of Trustees. \nOn July 4\, 2026\, the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This act\, which formally separated the 13 colonies from British rule\, shook and reshaped the world. The “American experiment” rested on the revolutionary idea that legitimate government rests on the consent of the governed. Independence did not come easily or without grave cost. The American Revolution last seven long years\, with tens of thousands of lives lost. \nToday\, historians\, philosophers\, and people worldwide continue to study the Founding\, the principles of democratic republicanism\, and its evolution over the past 250 years. Darien Library joins museums\, libraries\, educational and cultural institutions nationwide in commemorating the semiquincentennial\, known as “America 250\,” through a series of public programs that celebrate American history and reflect on our nation’s continuing pursuit of a more perfect union.
