DESCRIPTION:Darien Library and Barrett Bookstore welcome author Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney\, who will talk about her new book\, Lake Effect. Cynthia\, author of the bestselling novel\, The Nest\, will be in conversation with local editor and interviewer Demetra Ganias. \nThis event will take place on Tuesday\, June 2nd at 7 p.m. in the Community Room. \nThe novel\, set first in 1977 in Rochester\, New York\, is a portrait of two neighbor families forever upended by one affair\, and the decades of love\, loss\, and reckoning that follow. \nThe book explores questions that have long fascinated D’Aprix Sweeney: “What happens when the mores of society suddenly change\, and previously closed doors swing wide open? When options that were once verboten\, are suddenly possible? What do we do when our desires threaten the comfort and security of the people we loved first?” Tapping into the current zeitgeist of stories about women in their 40s rediscovering their sexuality\, D’Aprix Sweeney’s novel deftly reminds us that these longings are not new. She captures well what it was like back then for a woman to explore her own agency and desire as rising divorce rates began to reshape American families\, a phenomenon she remembers with “crystal clarity” from her own youth and the “scared and queasy” feeling it produced. \nAbout the Book\nIn Lake Effect we meet Nina Larkin\, a homemaker in her mid-40s whose marriage is in a deep slumber. When a newly divorced friend gives her a copy of The Joy of Sex\, Nina begins to question the lack of passion in her life and soon finds it in an intoxicating affair with a next door neighbor with a high profile in town. DESCRIPTION:In 1960\, an Eastern Airlines flight had no sooner lifted from the runway at Boston Logan Airport when it struck a flock of birds and took a nosedive into the shallow waters of the Boston Harbor\, killing 62 people. This was the golden age of commercial airflight—luxury in the skies—and safety was essential to the precarious future of air travel. So the FAA instructed the bird remains be sent to the Smithsonian Institution for examination\, where they would land on the desk of the only person in the world equipped to make sense of it all. \nHer name was Roxie Laybourne\, a diminutive but singular woman with thick glasses\, a heavy Carolina drawl\, and a passion for birds. Roxie didn’t know it at the time\, but that box full of dead birds marked the start of a remarkable scientific journey. She became the world’s first forensic ornithologist\, investigating a range of crimes and calamites on behalf of the FBI\, the US Air Force\, and even NASA. \nDarien Library is excited to welcome author Chris Sweeney\, who will discuss his new biography on the life and story of Roxie Laybourne in The Feather Detective. \nWednesday\, June 10th at 7 p.m. in the Heron Room. \nAbout The Author \nChris Sweeney is an award-winning journalist and critically acclaimed author whose work has appeared in Audubon\, The Guardian\, Popular Science\, Wired\, Playboy\, and The Boston Globe\, among many others. Over the years he has covered everything from the cutthroat world of competitive bagpiping to the mysterious death of a Golden Eagle. He holds a master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He presently lives in Boston with his wife and their two young daughters.

As one of only two libraries in the state of Connecticut participating\, Darien Library is proud to host two livestream screenings of TED Democracy Philadelphia: Founding Futures\, a daylong symposium featuring some of the world’s brightest thinkers. These inspiring speakers will share ideas and solutions designed to inform and inspire. \nThis unique event is designed to create a welcoming space for civic engagement while offering opportunities for reflection and conversation.
