SUMMARY:Author Talk: Eve J. Chung\, "The Young Will Remember"
DESCRIPTION:Darien Library and Barrett Bookstore welcome author Eve J. Chung\, who will discuss her new book\, “The Young Will Remember.” Chung’s debut novel is the popular book group read\, “Daughters of Shandong.” \nChung’s decision to write her second novel on the Korean War was sparked after learning that her husband’s grandfather was a Baptist pastor who fled Communist North Korea. Chung wondered: what about those who stayed? So was borne the Pak family and their complicated relationship with American correspondent Ellie Chang. \nChung is a human-rights lawyer and has worked on the ground in multiple international conflict zones. These personal encounters with suffering\, especially women’s suffering\, are imprinted on the heart of her second novel. \nRegister at https://www.darienlibrary.org/event/eve-j-chung-author-talk-101638 \nAbout the Book\n1950. It’s the coldest winter in decades\, and twenty-eight-year-old Chinese American journalist Ellie Chang is on a military flight to cover a battle in the mountains of North Korea when her plane is shot down. \nAs she emerges from the fallen aircraft onto an icy field surrounded by the enemy\, Ellie is sure it’s the end\, certain she’ll never make it home to her parents…until a woman pushes her way through the crowd and claims Ellie as the lost daughter that she’s been searching for since the last war ended. Never mind that Ellie doesn’t speak a word of Korean. \nEllie is taken in by her rescuer—a woman who calls herself “Emma”—and the Paks\, a pastor’s family. She knows she can’t stay and yet there’s no way she’ll survive on her own. \nAs the war intensifies\, the sky alighting with bombs overhead\, Ellie convinces Emma and the Paks to travel south towards an elusive promise of safety\, and where Ellie insists they are more likely to find Emma’s real daughter\, stuck on the other side of the frontlines. \nEmma’s decision to claim Ellie\, and Ellie’s choice to take her hand will connect their lives forever. \nAbout the Author\nEve J. Chung is a Taiwanese American lawyer and women’s human rights specialist. She has worked on a range of issues\, including torture\, sexual violence\, contemporary forms of slavery\, and discriminatory legislation. Her writing is inspired by social justice movements\, and the continued struggle for equality and fundamental freedoms worldwide. Her first book\, Daughters of Shandong\, was an instant USA Today bestseller\, a New York Times Editors’ Choice\, and Good Morning America buzz pick. “The Young Will Remember” is Chung’s second novel. She currently lives in New York with her husband\, two children\, and two dogs.

SUMMARY:Author Talk\, Christina Baker Kline\, "The Foursome"
DESCRIPTION:Darien Library and Barrett Bookstore are thrilled to welcome author\, Christina Baker Kline\, who will discuss her newest novel\, “The Foursome.” The book is a bold and original reimagining of an astonishing true story: two sisters in nineteenth-century North Carolina – Kline’s own distant relatives — who married world-famous conjoined twins from Siam\, Eng and Chang Bunker. \nRegister at https://www.darienlibrary.org/event/christine-baker-kline-102099 \nA fascinating discussion not to be missed – we hope to see you there! \nAbout the Book\nWhen Chang and Eng Bunker arrive in Wilkes County in 1839\, they’re not just a curiosity—they’re a sensation. Everyone is eager to learn whether the salacious rumors about them are true. Within months\, the twins have opened a general store\, bought land\, and begun building a plantation. Now\, word has it\, they’re looking for wives—and in a place that thrives on gossip and legacy\, their ambitions set the community on edge. \nSarah and Adelaide Yates\, daughters of a once-prominent local family brought low by scandal\, are drawn into their orbit. Bold\, beautiful Addie sees in the twins’ fame a chance to reclaim her future. Sallie\, quiet and observant\, isn’t so sure. When the twins’ lives become entangled with theirs\, they must navigate loyalty\, longing\, and identity in a world where everything—including race\, class\, and gender—is rigidly defined. \nSpanning five decades and unfolding against the backdrop of a fractured nation hurtling toward war\, The Foursome is both intimate and epic: a story of love and constraint\, identity and reinvention. With piercing insight and emotional precision\, Kline brings to life a forgotten chapter of American history and the complex\, boundary-defying marriages at its center. \nAbout the Author\nA #1 New York Times bestselling author of ten novels\, including Orphan Train\, The Exiles\, Please Don’t Lie (co-authored with Anne Burt)\, and the forthcoming The Foursome\, Christina Baker Kline is published in more than 40 countries. Her novels have received the New England Prize for Fiction\, the Maine Literary Award\, and a Barnes & Noble Discover Award\, among other prizes\, and have been chosen by hundreds of communities\, universities\, and schools as “One Book\, One Read” selections. Her essays\, articles\, and reviews have appeared in publications such as The New York Times and The New York Times Book Review\, The Washington Post\, The Boston Globe\, and The San Francisco Chronicle.
