The Opportunity

The Darien Land Trust is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Executive Director to manage a nonprofit organization that has preserved land in Darien for more than 65 years. The DLT is committed to serving the community through the active stewardship of 225 acres that include meadowlands, woodlands, marshlands and coastal areas. The land trust is supported by a membership of nearly 500 residents in Darien, Connecticut. 

Our Executive Director will work in partnership with the Board of Trustees to provide leadership and direction in maintaining best practices in our governance, stewardship, land review and financial management. Our Executive Director will engage with the community at outreach events to present the DLT as a leader in conservation and will maintain strong relationships with our partner organizations.

Our Executive Director (ED) reports to the Board President and is responsible for advancing the mission of the Darien Land Trust. Our ED manages all aspects of the organization, including land acquisition, land stewardship, community engagement, staff management and development, financial management and fundraising. Our ED also supports the Board, assisting with strategic planning, policy development and leadership for the organization. This specifically includes implementing DLT’s Strategic Plan.

Experience and Education

  • Previous non-profit experience is preferred, including experience working with a non-profit board
  • Ability to work with staff and board to build trust, strengthen the organization’s effectiveness and encourage programs that support the mission 
  • A track record of effective leadership skills, including a collaborative management style that promotes accountability
  • A sound understanding of non-profit finance and budgeting, legal requirements and role of Board
  • Fundraising experience
  • Technology skills, including Excel, Google Drive, iContact and QuickBooks; familiarity with data base management and social media
  • A bachelor’s degree is required and an advanced degree in the field is preferred
